Biography

Stefan Sonvilla-Weiss, Ph.D., is an international media scholar, designer, and educator from Austria.

He was a full professor of Media and Communication at Zayed University in Abu Dhabi/Dubai from 2021 to 2026.
Before that, he was a media design professor and dean at the University of Art and Design Linz in Austria from 2014 to 2021.
From 2003 to 2014, he started as a visiting professor at the University of Art and Design Helsinki and became a full professor and head of an international master’s program at Aalto University, School of Arts, Design and Architecture in Helsinki in 2006.
As a researcher, artist, and speaker, he has worked with many institutions around the world. His notable engagements include the Oxford Internet Institute, Seoul National University for Design Talks, the National Institute of Multimedia Education in Tokyo, the University of the Arts London, Zurich University of the Arts, ZKM Karlsruhe, and Tongji University in Shanghai.

He published the monographs Spaces of Commemoration and Communication (transcript/Columbia University Press, 2023) and Synthesis & Nullification. Works 1991 – 2011 (Springer Wien/New York, 2012), (In)visible. Learning to Act in the Metaverse (Springer Wien/New York, 2008), Virtual School – kunstnetzwerk.at (Peter Lang, 2003), and he has edited VIS-A-VIS Medien.Kunst.Bildung (DeGruyter, 2017), Future Learning Spaces (Aalto University Press, 2012), Mashup Cultures (Springer, 2010), and (e)Pedagogy Design – Visual Knowledge Building (Peter Lang, 2005).
